This Site describes many services that HCHD's dedicated employees provide to over half a million residents of Hidalgo County.
Most People don't realize how many vital services they receive from their local health department. These services have become such an integral part of America's standard of living that most people take them for granted.
These essential - yet practically invisible - public health services include assuring sanitation, providing immunization, family planning and prenatal care, improving nutrition and conducting restaurant inspections.
As a result of the many remarkable public health programs, Americans are enjoying a longer, healthier and
more active life that was inconceivable only a few decades ago.
But we still have much work to do with the many challenges that are facing public health agencies, They include obesity, tobacco use, injuries, lack of immunizations and lack of access to adequate health care for
all citizens.
As part of our mission, all of us at the Hidalgo County Health Department will continue to work to address these - and many other - public health problems in the future.

Pertussis / Tos Ferina What is Pertussis? Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a potentially deadly bacterial infection that can strike at any age, but is particularly dangerous for babies. The sounds of pertussis are like no other, marked by a “whoop” made when gasping for breath after a severe coughing attack. The most effective way to prevent pertussis is through vaccination with DTaP for infants and children and with Tdap for pre-teens, teens and adults.
